Places of worship
International humanitarian law, particularly the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the 1977 Additional Protocol I, grants special protection to places of worship, considering them as civilian objects that must not be targeted during armed conflicts. Attacks on places of worship, such as mosques and churches, constitute a violation of individuals' right to freely and safely practice their religion, a right also guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 18) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (Article 18). Any deliberate destruction or targeting of places of worship is a serious violation of international law and constitutes a war crime.
