Torture Crimes Against Detainees: A Flagrant Violation of International Humanitarian Law

Palestinian detainees in the occupation’s prisons are subjected to brutal forms of physical and psychological torture aimed at breaking their will and stripping away their humanity. The methods of torture vary, including severe beatings, deprivation of sleep, prolonged solitary confinement, and violent interrogations accompanied by threats and humiliation. These violations not only constitute a blatant breach of international humanitarian law but also form part of a systematic oppression mechanism used by the occupation to intimidate the Palestinian people and undermine their resistance. Documenting these crimes is essential for achieving justice, accountability, and fairness for detainees who live in inhumane conditions, deprived of their basic rights.

A wounded detainee arrived at Shuhada Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah Governorate.

He recounted: “They shot me and took me to Barzilai Hospital in Beersheba.”

On 6/9/2024, Israeli occupation forces released a video showing the brutal mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners inside an Israeli prison called “Megiddo.”

After being trapped for ten days without food or water, he was arrested by the Israeli occupation forces.

“We spent 18 days; I can’t even describe how difficult it was.”

Israeli occupation soldiers detained a group of civilians and subjected them to brutal torture, with no regard for the age or health conditions of the detainees. They were transported in tanks to Israeli prisons, where they endured severe beatings and abuse.

Their eyes are continuously covered, and their hands are bound, preventing them from perceiving their surroundings or time. During interrogations, they are forced to stand on stones.

Israeli occupation forces bombed Wadi Al-Ara’is area east of Zeitoun neighborhood, Gaza City, targeting civilians with sniper fire, demolishing buildings, and moving bodies on the ground without prior warning or notice. The survivors in the house were trapped for 5 days without food or water until Israeli soldiers stormed the home, tortured the residents, stripped them, and arrested them.

“You’re not allowed to unbind your hands or open your eyes. They don’t give you a second. You can’t tell night from day.”
